Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Extreme CacheMaster and how it can help your ISP deliver better service.
What is the benefit for the ISP?
Extreme CacheMaster enables ISPs to provide huge, cheap bandwidth to users, offload expensive upstream channels, gain content visibility, and dramatically improve the browser experience for subscribers.
How can the ISP differentiate what traffic to send on high speed?
The system marks peering traffic with DSCP marks for high-speed user queues. This feature is known as multi-queue, triple play, etc., and integrates with your existing QoS infrastructure.
Where in the network does Extreme CacheMaster go?
Extreme CacheMaster is deployed above the NAS/BRAS, intercepting traffic before it reaches end users. This positioning allows optimal caching and peering performance.
What type of traffic do you cache?
We cache plain and encrypted torrents, and HTTP 0.9/1.0/1.1 traffic. Any flavor of encrypted HTTP (HTTPS, HTTP/2.0, SPDY) cannot be intercepted for caching due to end-to-end encryption.
How does the system work?
Extreme CacheMaster uses an L7 DPI module to recognize multiple HTTP and P2P protocols and route data requests to cache or other users within your network for local delivery.
How is the traffic redirected to Extreme CacheMaster?
Best practice is via Policy-Based Routing (PBR). The system can also operate in bridge mode for networks where PBR is not available.
What is the pricing model?
Extreme CacheMaster is billed on traffic saved (i.e., generated by the system). The price of the saved traffic is significantly less than typical internet bandwidth costs, ensuring positive ROI.
Is Extreme CacheMaster legal?
Yes. Extreme CacheMaster is fully compliant with DMCA and international copyright laws, including the Indian Copyright Act. We've designed the system for legitimate ISP operations worldwide.
My last mile is Fiber/Ethernet/DOCSIS3. How can I differentiate on the market?
With Extreme CacheMaster, you can deliver very high-speed services to your end users without incurring costs for expensive internet bandwidth. This lets you offer premium speeds at competitive prices.
What about in-band vs out-of-band solutions for torrent traffic?
Extreme CacheMaster saves from upstream traffic by routing transparently all connections either to the cache or to other local peers. This in-band approach provides genuine bandwidth savings rather than just traffic shaping.
What happens if Extreme CacheMaster fails?
The system has internal and automatic bypass in case of software failure. It can also be manually bypassed via PBR removal. Your users will never experience downtime due to Extreme CacheMaster.
We've tried other HTTP caches and always get user complaints.
Extreme CacheMaster identifies potentially problematic requests and handles them appropriately. Our system is transparent enough that even SSH can work through our HTTP cache without issues.
What servers are needed?
Extreme CacheMaster runs on standard off-the-shelf server hardware from leading vendors such as Supermicro, Dell, HP, and others. We offer both All-in-One (AIO) solutions for smaller deployments and GRID architecture for larger networks. Contact our sales team for specific hardware recommendations based on your subscriber count.
